Famille des Guise - Former owner
Owner of the castle destroyed in 1752.
Origin and history
The Maison des Gardes, located in Arcueil in Val-de-Marne, is a 17th century vestige. It was a dependency of the former Guise castle, now extinct. This castle, destroyed in 1752, was an emblematic place of the region, and this house is the last architectural testimony still standing. The building currently houses a cultural centre, thus perpetuating its role in local life.
The protection of this monument was formalized by a decree of 10 April 1929, which included its facades in the inventory of Historical Monuments. The precise location of the Maison des Gardes is attested at 24 rue Emile-Raspail, although approximate GPS coordinates are also located nearby, at 1 rue Darius Milhaud. This monument, owned by the municipality of Arcueil, illustrates the architectural heritage of the Guise, an influential family of the Ancien Régime.
Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum base, confirm its status as a Historic Monument. Although its exact location has been discussed (noted with "a priori satisfactory" accuracy), its heritage importance remains undeniable. Today, the House of Guards symbolizes both the aristocratic past of the region and its contemporary anchor in Arcueil's cultural life.
