Origin and history

The Cail Hotel, located at 3 rue de Lisbon and 56 boulevard Malesherbes in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, is a former mansion built in the 3rd quarter of the 19th century (1865). Sponsored by industrialist Jean-François Cail, from Chef-Boutonne, it was designed by architect Albert Labouret as a private residence. Interior decorations, including Pierre-Édouard Charrier's sculptures and Pierre-Victor Galland's paintings, celebrate industry, agriculture and commerce, which are the sources of Cail's fortune. Two medallions depicting Mercury and Ceres adorn the wall facing the large staircase, while the ceilings are enriched with allegorical frescoes.

In 1922, Jean-François Cail's daughter sold the hotel to the city of Paris for 6,781,050 francs. Four years later, in 1926, he became the town hall of the 8th arrondissement, replacing the premises of the street of Anjou. An additional wing, designed by architect Jacques Hermant between 1926 and 1928, was added to Lisbon Street to house a court of instance. The official inauguration took place on 2 June 1926, marking its transformation into a public place.

The building has been partially listed as historical monuments since 1982, covering facades, roofs, the courtyard with its fountain, wrought iron staircase, as well as several living rooms and rooms keeping their original décor. A second inscription in 2025 extends this protection to the entire ground floor (excluding exhibition hall) and to the two upper floors. Today, the Cail Hotel combines administrative functions (marriages, municipal offices) and heritage, testifying to the opulence of the industrial bourgeoisie of the Second Empire.
