Origin and history

The Hotel de Lacoste, located in Pézenas, is an emblematic monument whose construction spans between the late 15th and 17th centuries. Its architecture combines late Gothic elements, such as the central column vaulted vestibule, with Renaissance additions, including dogive-crossed galleries and window frames. The inner courtyard, with a well and a lodge under a half-cradle, preserves traces of a decorative crenelage, symbol of the noble status of its first owners, the Montagut, lords of Lacoste. The main staircase, redesigned in 1638 with a visible awkwardness, incorporates ogival vaults pasting the original style, while the balustrade of the ramp and terrace dates from the mid-17th century, possibly linked to the visit of Louis XIV in 1660.

The history of the hotel is marked by prestigious events: in 1533, the daughters of France, Madeleine and Louise, stayed there at the solemn entrance of Queen Eléonore of Austria to Pézenas. At the beginning of the 17th century, the General States of the Province remained there in 1613 and 1614, emphasizing its political importance. On 6 April 1660 Prince Armand de Bourbon-Conti received Louis XIV there, a major episode for the residence. The building, originally formed by the re-integration of two houses acquired by Étienne de Montagut between 1509 and 1518, remained in the family until the marriage of François IV de Montagut in 1656. The new owners La Serre expanded the hotel in the 18th century by incorporating old vacancies and part of the urban wall, adding a neo-classical facade on the current Marshal Street of Plantavit.

The architectural transformations reflect the successive adaptations of the hotel. The street façade, redesigned in the 17th and 18th centuries, incorporates a segmental arched door and pilasters, while the rear, Oustrin Street, preserves Renaissance elements as frames of windows identical to those of the courtyard. Inside, a ceiling with ground beams and flooring remains, reflecting the original design. The dovecote and the patus (agricultural spaces) mentioned in the archives recall its seignorial use, between wine production and breeding. Ranked a Historic Monument in 1965 for its facades, roofs, stairs and galleries, the hotel will house until 1902 a literary circle, before becoming property of the Société Générale.

The anomalies of connection between the medieval parts and the additions of the seventeenth century, like the staircase with open straight flights, reveal a desire for stylistic coherence despite centuries. The keystone dated 1638 and the modifications related to the royal visit of 1660 (balustrades, court layout) illustrate this dynamic. The river between the hotel and the city wall and the remains of the wine vats evoke its insertion into the medieval fabric of Pézenas, then prosperous town of Languedoc. Today, although private property, its architectural heritage and its political and cultural past make it a symbol of the influence of Pézenas in the Renaissance and classical eras.
