Origin and history

The Hôtel-Dieu de Nogent-le-Rotrou was founded in 1182 on a pilgrimage axis to Compostela, offering refuge and care to travellers and the poor. Located in a town then under the influence of the Counts of Perche, it embodied medieval charity, with a central chapel surrounded by small independent houses for the sick and religious.

In the 17th century, the establishment was transformed under the impulse of Maximilian of Bethune, Duke of Sully (1559–1641), Minister of Henry IV and Lord of Nogent-le-Rotrou. As a Protestant, Sully chose to be buried outside the church in a courtyard where his wife Rachel de Cochechilet erected a mausoleum in slate topped by their gilding statues, carved by Baudin. In 1643, a monumental limestone portal, adorned with Corinthian columns and an armored pediment, was added to mark the entrance to the courtyard.

Between 1728 and 1732 the men's hall replaced the house of the vaults, followed in 1772 by the construction of the women's hall, adjacent to the oratory. In the 19th century, under the direction of architect Lebart (1861–66), the hospice expanded: a floor was added to the main body, a forebody was erected for bathrooms, and a stair turret was built in 1868. The establishment, run by the sisters of Saint Vincent de Paul since 1672, also houses a military hospital in 1878 and a maternity hospital in 1933.

The gate, damaged during the Revolution, was restored in 1897 with the entire facade. Ranked a Historic Monument in 1990 for its portal and bastard door, the Hôtel-Dieu testifies to the evolution of hospital practices, religious and civil architecture, and aristocratic patronage. Today, it remains a symbol of the charitable and architectural heritage of Perche, integrated with the urban fabric of Nogent-le-Rotrou.

The building also illustrates social transformations: medieval hospice to modern hospital, it reflects medical progress and urban reforms of the 18th and 19th centuries. Its history is inseparable from that of the city, marked by the wars of religion, revolution, and industrialization, while preserving traces of its initial role of welcoming and caring.
