Origin and history

The oppidum du Casterat is an archaeological site located in the commune of Ibos, in the department of Hautes-Pyrénées (65), in the Occitan region. This monument, dated from the Protohistory, illustrates the importance of oppidas as places of refuge and territorial control during this period. Its strategic location suggests a defensive and economic role for local populations.

The oppidum was listed as a Historical Monument by order of 26 December 1984, thus protecting the remains on the cadastral plots AH 36, 45 and 58. Although available sources (Monumentum, Merimée data) do not specify the details of its construction or occupation, its classification attests to its heritage value. The approximate location, noted as "passable" (level 5/10), places the site near the place called L'Oumpre, in Ibos.

In Protohistory, oppidas were central places for the Gaulish or Iberian communities, serving as points of assembly, commerce and defence. These sites reflect a hierarchical social organization and intense cultural exchanges in Western Europe. The opidum of the Casterat is part of this regional context, although its local specificities remain partially documented.

Today, the site does not appear to be systematically open to the visit, and the practical information (access, time) is not detailed in the available sources. His study is more of archaeological research than general public tourism, highlighting his scientific interest rather than recreational.
