Origin and history

The building on 38 rue de la Boucherie in Limoges is a building before 1765, representative of architecture dedicated to the butcher's trade. This street concentrated houses designed exclusively for this activity, with specific facilities: cellars dug in the tuff for the summer preservation of meats, dark rooms for the storage of tallow and greases, as well as attices for the forage and straw reserves. These spaces reflect the pragmatic organisation of a specialised artisanal district, where each element met specific professional needs.

The ventilation system of the building, composed of galetas and galleries superimposed under the frame, illustrates an engineering suitable for drying and storing leathers and skins. These devices, combined with the tubing structure, demonstrate a mastery of pre-industrial preservation techniques. The entire rue de la Boucherie thus formed a coherent professional ecosystem, where architecture directly served the imperatives of the profession.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of 4 October 1993, this building (caster DY 110) today embodies the limougeaud artisanal heritage. Its inscription highlights the heritage value of constructions related to medieval and modern corporations, still visible in the urban landscape. The accuracy of its location is assessed as satisfactory, and its official address remains 38 rue de la Boucherie, in the department of Haute-Vienne.
