Origin and history

The building located 1-2 rue du Plan-Boudou in Agde is a house built in 1627, as evidenced by the date engraved on its portal. The latter has an architectural peculiarity: it combines a classical framework (stoned capital piles, curved frieze) with cavet mouldings, decorative technique in vogue since the 16th century in Agde and persistent until the 18th century. The bow key, decorated with acanthes and a palmette, supports a tailloir bearing the date of construction. The frieze, crossed by a camus boudin, incorporates an oval oculus, while a broken circular pediment crowns the ensemble, framing a flat stone.

The pilasters, devoid of ornaments, are surmounted by ground capitals, and the opening of the porch is rhythmic by three large cellars emphasized by the impostes. This mix of styles reflects the cross-influences between local Agathic traditions and classical cannons emerging in the 17th century. The portal, the only protected element (registered in 1965), illustrates the evolution of architectural tastes in a port city then booming economically.

The location of the building, in the historic centre of Agde, suggests that it belongs to an area probably frequented by merchants or notables. Trimoid and flat tympanum bosses, cut into quarter circles, add a rare sculptural dimension to a private home of that time. The building thus bears witness to the city's prosperity, linked to its port activity and its role as a crossroads between the Mediterranean and the Languedoc hinterland.
