Origin and history

The building at 14 rue du Pilori in Bayonne dates from the 14th century and is distinguished by its medieval cellar, classified as Historic Monument. Its architecture is based on a central pillar evoking a palm tree, around which are organized four arched bays with edges simply chamfered. The trapezoidal plane of the underground space results from the stress imposed by the neighbouring cellars, while niches and credences dug in the walls optimize the usable surface.

The arch keys, adorned with rings, and the bold structure of the vaults bear witness to a typical medieval architectural know-how. The cellar, protected by order of 1 February 1988, constitutes the only classified element of the building (cadastral reference BX 61). Its location, in the heart of Bayonne in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, makes it a rare remnant of medieval Aquitaine urbanism, although its geographical accuracy is considered mediocre (note 5/10).

No information is available on the precise historical uses of this cellar, or on any owners or sponsors. Sources are limited to architectural descriptions and mention of heritage protection. The Creative Commons License of Associated Photo (Daniel VILLAFRUELA) suggests a contemporary documentary interest for this discreet but technically remarkable monument.
