Origin and history
The Saint-Louis butcher shop is a building located at 29 rue Guérin in Autun, in the department of Saône-et-Loire. Built between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it embodies the Art Nouveau style with a facade adorned with marble panels, black, blue and gold glass paintings, and golden bovine sculptures. Its zinc lamprequin and wolf tooth hooks, a vestige of old bullish practices, add to its historical character.
The façade of the butcher shop was listed as historic monuments on August 4, 1995, recognizing its heritage value. A plaque affixed by the fondeurs indicates their identity: "Jules Mareschale and G. Petitdidier, 185 rue d'Allemagne Paris", attesting to their contribution to the construction of this building. In addition, the building is labeled "Twentieth Century Heritage", highlighting its importance in local architectural history.
The decorative elements of the Saint-Louis butcher shop, such as painted iris and animal sculptures, reflect the artistic aesthetics of the 1900s. These details, combined with the cast iron structure, illustrate the technical innovation and attention to detail characteristic of Art Nouveau. The monument thus fits into the urban landscape of Autun as a testimony of this pivotal period between two centuries.
