Origin and history
The building at No. 41 Magenta Boulevard in Fontainebleau is nicknamed Marteau House. Built in the city centre, it is distinguished by its modest style and its four levels. On its ground floor is the Magenta Café, formerly called Le Rendez-Vous des Tramways, a name related to the proximity of the Fontainebleau tram stop, inaugurated in 1896. At that time, the building also housed a wine trade, A. Huger, and its facades were modified to adapt to the crowd of users.
During the inter-war period, the building lost its steps on the boulevard side, enlarged its windows and finally took the name Marteau house. Its history is marked by its adaptation to urban developments, particularly with the arrival of public transport. The architectural transformations reflect this period of modernization, while maintaining a sober appearance, characteristic of the local constructions of the period.
The facades of the building were inscribed in historical monuments by order of 26 November 1928, as private property. This heritage protection underscores its architectural and historical interest, albeit modest. Today, Magenta Café, still active under this name, perpetuates the memory of this place linked to the daily life and transportation of Fontainebleau at the turn of the 20th century.
