Origin and history
The buildings in the 11th arrondissement of Paris, built in the second half of the 19th century, are an original urban project combining housing and workspaces. Designed by J.-F. Cail, they are part of the spirit of 19th-century utopian communities, aimed at improving the living conditions of artisans, including cabinetmakers. This set reflects the social and industrial concerns of the time, where one sought to reconcile productivity and worker welfare.
The architecture of the places, protected since 1992 (facades, roofs, stairs), bears witness to this ambition. The buildings, located between the Rue des Immeubles-Industriels, de Montreuil, and Boulevard Voltaire, were intended for a people of artisans, in a neighbourhood that was changing. Their design met an ideal of collective organization, typical of the innovative urban experiences of the Second Empire and the Third Republic.
The accuracy of their current location is considered satisfactory a priori (note 6/10), and their heritage protection underscores their historic value. The identified contractor, E. Lemenil, supervised this ambitious project, now considered a rare example of 19th century social planning. Available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) confirm their status as classified buildings, although their access to the public (visits, rentals) is not specified.
