The old door, at the entrance of the alley of the Grimace: inscription by decree of 2 February 1948
Origin and history
The enclosure of Saint-Sulpice-de-Favières is a 13th-century historical monument located in the Essonne department of Île-de-France. This medieval vestige, now partially preserved, bears witness to the strategic importance of village fortifications at that time. Only the old gate, located at the entrance of the street of the Grimace, was protected by a registration order on 2 February 1948, highlighting its exceptional heritage character.
The location of the enclosure, around the Great Place and the Church Square, suggests a defensive and organizing role for the medieval village. At that time, urban fora were used to protect the inhabitants from frequent conflicts (feudal wars, looting) while structuring the communal space. Their construction also reflected the relative prosperity of villages, often linked to dominant agricultural or craft activities in Île-de-France.
Today, the enclosure belongs to the municipality of Saint-Sulpice-de-Favières (code Insee 91578). Although its overall state is not detailed in the sources, the accuracy of the location is considered satisfactory a priori (note 6/10), and photographs licensed under Creative Commons (credit: Smostowski) document its current aspect. No information is available on its accessibility to the public or its contemporary use (visits, events).
