Origin and history
The castle of Bugarach, located in the eponymous village of the department of Aude, Occitanie, is a 16th century vestige today in crystallized ruins. Although partially restored, it retains significant architectural elements such as a square tower, courtines and cannons, traces of its defensive role. Its inscription in historic monuments in 1948 underscores its heritage importance, despite its fragmentary state.
The first written mention of the site dates back to 889 under the term villa, but no remains prior to the 16th century remained. In 1586 the castle was dismantled by the Catholics after the evacuation of the village by the religious (protesters), in order to prevent any strategic reoccupation. The present ruins, never seen after this destruction, include a north corner flanked by a square tower, an oriental courtine about ten meters high, and traces of a staircase in a lost round tower. The more recent western and southern walls are the result of reconstructions linked to a later farm.
Among the notable architectural details, the eastern courtine has a sill window, while the northern square tower has modified bays and a square embrasure. A scallop remains partially at the southern corner. The gunboats on the west side of the tower recall its military use during the Wars of Religion. Today, the site remains a silent testimony of these tensions, accessible in the centre of the village.
The castle has been protected as historical monuments since 13 April 1948, specifically covering its ruins. Its exact address, 7 Rue du Coin de l'Ange, and its Insee code (11055) place it precisely in the municipality of Bugarach, attached to the district of Carcassonne. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated a priori satisfactory (level 6/10), depending on available sources.
