Origin and history

The castle of Varax, located in Marcilly-d'Azergues in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, is a monument built between the late 17th and 19th centuries. This rectangular building is distinguished by its sober exterior décor and a classic interior distribution. Among its most notable features is a first floor bedroom decorated with two large canvases attributed to Van der Cabel, as well as a square-plan chapel decorated with high-quality wall paintings made between 1688 and the beginning of the 18th century. The estate also includes amenities such as a garden, a hydraulic system from the late 19th century, an orangery, a cooler, and columns from the Tuileries.

The castle and its outbuildings, including communes, pavilions, and a drainage network, have been fully protected since 2012. The ensemble is surrounded by a fourteen-kilometre wall enclosure, highlighting the historic and heritage significance of the site. Although the practical information on visits or services (rent, guest rooms) is not specified in the sources, the castle remains a major architectural and artistic testimony of the region, mixing classical heritage and innovations of past centuries.

The interior decorations, especially those of the chapel, illustrate the influence of Baroque and classical arts in France during this period. The murals, dated between 1688 and the beginning of the eighteenth century, as well as the paintings of Van der Cabel, reflect the artistic patronage and refinement of the owners of the period. The hydraulic system and landscape developments, added at the end of the 19th century, show a desire to adapt to technical and aesthetic developments, while preserving the historical character of the estate.
