Origin and history

Hohe Weyersberg Castle was built in 1560 on the hill of Grünberg, 2 km north of Bitschertal, in the territory of the commune of Mouterhouse. Commanded by Count Jacques de Deux-Ponts-Bitche, this castle met the strategic needs of the time, in an area marked by political and military tensions.

By the end of the 16th century, the castle was abandoned and fell into ruins. Today, only the remains of a tower remain, bearing witness to its medieval past. These ruins are listed in the inventory of French cultural heritage under reference IA00037972, attesting to their historical value.

The site is located in the country of Bitche, an area rich in castles and architectural heritage. Its history is linked to the family of Deux-Ponts-Bitche, which played an important role in the region. The remains of Hohe Weyersberg provide an overview of Renaissance defensive constructions in eastern France.
