Origin and history
The castle of Mollard-Rond is a strong house built in the first half of the 14th century by Guillaume de Paladru. Located in Saint-Jean-d'Avelanne, in a border area between Savoy and Dauphiné, this monument reflects the geopolitical tensions of the time. Its location at the end of an eminence suggests a possible castral origin, reinforced by the regularity of the surrounding slope.
In the 17th century, the castle underwent major changes that gave it its present appearance, marked by a plan in U with two wings and high roofs. Although not architecturally innovative, its harmony and proportions give it a certain nobility. Inside, the painted fireplace on the first floor stands out as a remarkable decorative element, while other spaces retain structural simplicity.
Ranked a Historic Monument in 1998, the castle includes in its protection the main building, its communes, its farm and the terraces of the hill on which it is built. L'Isère, a department rich in fortified houses, counts this monument among its authentic examples, although little documented. Its state of conservation and its precise location (360 Chemin de Mollarond) make it a tangible testimony of local history, between medieval defense and seigneurial residence.
