Origin and history
The Château du Patron, located in Brouzet-lès-Quissac in the Gard, was first mentioned in 1696 as the Patron's farmhouse, then as a castle from 1745. Historical texts indicate that, after 1810, the estate was profoundly remodeled along a strict geometric axis: the master house was transformed into a cubic volume by the partial destruction of its wing on the courtyard side, while two symmetrical pavilions were added to delimit a court of honour. However, the south-west facade retains its oblique layout, inherited from the old building.
Around 1844, the construction of two wings of communes (east and west) completed the axial composition of the estate, aligned on an old communal road that became central driveway. The neo-classical style of the castle is manifested by sleek architectural elements: triangular pediment on the axial bay of the facade on courtyard, serlian on the opposite facade, and a loggia opening onto the park. The interior organization rests on a central gallery and a helical staircase, forming a Greek cross that structures four square rooms. The original decorations (rosaces, diamond, carpentry) date from the early 19th century.
The park, designed in a spirit of symmetry, includes plane trees arranged in squares, a pigeon tower, and a funerary rotunda (tombe des Boileau de Castelnau). A neo-Gothic cooler is integrated into the fence wall. The estate, including the master house, the communes, the dovecote and the park with its factories, was listed as historic monuments on March 11, 1998. Today it is a private property, showing the influence of Palladian villas in Languedoc in the 19th century.
