Castle with its interior decorations, courtyard, east terrace and park staircase (cad. AB 290, 148): inscription by order of 13 January 1997

Origin and history

Gignac Castle finds its origins in a first building destroyed during religious wars. Although the details of this first construction remain unclear, its fate reflects the violence that marked the region in the 16th and 17th centuries, where religious conflicts have profoundly transformed the architectural and social landscape.

The current building was rebuilt between 1760 and 1780, during a period of relative political and economic stability in France. This 18th-century castle is distinguished by its preserved interior elements, including old chimneys and gypsum shops, characteristic of the artistic refinement of the period. These decorations testify to the taste for ornamentation and comfort that then develops among the aristocracy and the affluent bourgeoisie.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of 13 January 1997, Gignac Castle includes in its protection its interior decorations, its courtyard, its terrace is and the stairway of the park. This official recognition underscores the heritage value of the building, both for its architecture and for the physical traces of the lifestyles of the provincial elites under the Old Regime. Today, the castle belongs to a private company, and its access to the public (visits, rentals, accommodation) is not specified in the available sources.
