Origin and history
The Convent of the Capuchins of Evreux, founded in the 17th century, is a former Franciscan monastery located at the corner of Jean Jaurès and Panette streets, near the railway station. Built to house a community of Capuchin brothers, the austere branch of the order of Francis d'Assisi, it embodies the ideal of poverty and relief to the needy. Its architecture, although of the seventeenth century, already announces the Maurist style of the eighteenth century, typical of monasteries of the modern era as the Abbey of Bec-Hellouin.
Over the centuries, the convent has had several vocations: monastery, then prison, high school, and finally conservatory with departmental influence since the 21st century. The latter perpetuates the musical tradition of Franciscans, taking advantage of the acoustics of the place. Among the notable figures, Saint Yves d'Evreux, a Capuchin missionary in Brazil in the seventeenth century, illustrates the spiritual and humanitarian commitment of order.
The building, classified with historical heritage, also symbolizes the urban evolution of Evreux. His history was studied by Norman historians such as François Neveux, highlighting his role in local cultural and religious life. Today, it combines architectural preservation and artistic dynamism, providing training in classical music and solfege for all ages.
