Origin and history
The Logis du Bois is a building located in the municipality of Grazay, in the department of Mayenne, in the Pays de la Loire region. This monument has been attested since the 15th century, although remains of its defence system, such as moat partially filled in the 18th century, date back to the 14th century. These elements suggest a medieval origin, with subsequent adaptations to meet the residential and defensive needs of the time.
Major changes in the house include the filling of moat in the 18th century, marking an evolution towards less defensive and more residential use. In the mid-19th century, dependencies were added, such as a kennel and orangery, reflecting the architectural tastes and lifestyles of the aristocracy or rural bourgeoisie of that period. These additions illustrate the adaptation of the house to the social and economic functions of its time, while maintaining traces of its medieval past.
The logis du Bois was listed as historical monuments by an order of 28 March 1995. This protection recognizes its heritage value, both for its architecture and its history, which extends from the Middle Ages to the modern era. The monument thus bears witness to the architectural and social evolutions of the region, from medieval fortifications to the residential developments of the following centuries.
