Origin and history

Le logis du Maine-Giraud is a 16th-century mansion located in Champagne-Vigny (formerly Champagne-de-Blanzac) in the Charente, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. This historic monument, registered in 1967 for its facades and roofs, is distinguished by its late medieval architecture, including a polygonal tower dated 1464 and a stone screw staircase. Originally, it belonged to a noble family, before becoming an emblematic place linked to French literary life.

The manor is inseparable from Alfred de Vigny, a poet and romantic writer, who became his owner in 1827 and resided there from 1850 to 1853. Emotionally moved by his "melancholic and serious aspect", he undertook major restorations: repair of towers, restoration of land, and installation of an alembic for the production of cognac. Vigny wrote several works in a cabinet at the top of the turret, inspired by the tragic history of the place, marked by "the breath of the Terror".

Before Vigny, the estate belonged to his grandfather, the Marquis de Baraudin, who acquired it in 1768, then to his aunt Sophie de Baraudin, canoness of Malta. After the death of the poet in 1863, the house was bequeathed to Louise Lachaud, daughter of a parisian lounger, before passing into the hands of the Philippon and Durand families. The latter, owners since 1938, revived the wine-growing activity, perpetuating the tradition initiated by Vigny, who sold his own wine to Blanzac.

The architecture of the house combines defensive and residential elements: a square tower to the west, a turret in corbellation, and a body of rectangular houses. The estate, still used for pine and cognac production, is visited today. The surrounding agricultural buildings and vineyards recall the time when Vigny managed the land himself, mixing literary creation and rural life.

Ranked a historic monument in 1967, Maine-Giraud illustrates both the architectural heritage of the Charente Renaissance and the French literary heritage. Its distillery, still active, and its cultural visits make it a living place, where history, viticulture and memory of Alfred de Vigny cross.
