Origin and history

Looze Castle is an 18th-century building located in the municipality of Looze, in the department of Yonne, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. This castle, originally built in the 17th century, underwent important beautification works in the 18th century under the direction of architect Francis II Franque. These works included the ramp of the main staircase, the woodwork of the large living room, and five chimneys, which were built between 1745 and 1758. The chapel of the castle was consecrated in 1756.

The castle and its outbuildings, including communes, pavilions, barn and chapel, were listed as historical monuments in 1963. A more detailed registration, also covering courses, terraces and gardens, was added by order of 16 June 2014. These protections highlight the heritage importance of the site, both for its architecture and its history.

Looze Castle illustrates the architectural evolution of aristocratic residences in Burgundy-Franche-Comté in the 18th century. The interventions of François II Franque, a renowned architect, reflect the artistic trends of the time, combining elegance and functionality. The presence of the chapel, consecrated in 1756, also shows the importance of the religious dimension in the lives of the chestnuts and their entourage at this time.
