Origin and history

This house, located at 10 rue Pernelle in La Rochelle, is a typical example of 18th century domestic architecture. It is distinguished by its deep structure, with a posterior lateral courtyard and a two-span facade in coated woollon. The interior organization includes a side corridor leading to a wooden staircase, with a ramp, characteristic of the bourgeois houses of the time. Despite its main dating in the 18th century, some interior elements, such as the staircase and a fireplace, date back to 1665, as evidenced by the date engraved on the skylight.

The protection of this monument was formalized by a decree of 29 September 1928, which specifically inscribed the facade and arcade. This recognition underscores its heritage interest, although its precise location is considered poor (note 5/10). The house thus illustrates the evolution of constructive techniques between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, while keeping traces of its older origin.

La Rochelle, the major port of the Atlantic facade, experienced in the 18th century an economic boom linked to maritime trade, especially with the colonies. The houses of this period often reflect the prosperity of local merchants and shipowners. This type of residence, both functional and representative of a certain social status, is part of a dense urban fabric, marked by narrow streets and internal courtyards, typical of the port cities of the time.
