Origin and history

Bellecombe Fort House is a monument located in the commune of Reignier-Ésery, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Although its name evokes a defensive or residential function typical of medieval strong houses, no precise information is available regarding its construction period or detailed history. The current internal data do not allow to date this building or trace its architectural evolutions or successive owners.

In the general context of the region, strong houses were often built between the 12th and 16th centuries by local lords or wealthy families. They served as both a residence, a place for storing crops and protection against conflicts or bandits. These buildings reflected the feudal and rural organization of the time, where the security and autonomy of the estates were paramount.

Reignier-Ésery, like other Savoyard municipalities, has experienced a similar occupation, marked by an agro-pastoral economy and limited exchanges with neighbouring urban centres.
