Origin and history

The house of Ligny-en-Barrois, rebuilt and enlarged in the early 19th century, retains remarkable architectural elements. The garden, surrounded by a fence wall, has evolved little since the 18th century, offering a preserved setting. Inside, two rooms stand out: the dining room on the ground floor, adorned with panelling carved in a troubadour style, with doors topped with hazes and a recessed buffet flanked by terms. The openworked impostes of archatures in brace reinforce this romantic style inspired by the Middle Ages.

Upstairs, the bedroom features an exceptional decoration of 17 panels carved in panelling, illustrating scenes from Bernardin de Saint-Pierre's novel Paul and Virginia. These decorations, dated from the years 1820-1840, fit into a neo-Gothic setting, with ogival arches structuring the walls. The inspiration could come from the engravings of an edition of the novel, reflecting the taste of the era for exotic and melancholic narratives. These two pieces, protected since 2003, bear witness to the refined craftsmanship and literary influences of the early 19th century.

Classified as a Historic Monument, the house is located at 7 rue Notre-Dame, in an area whose location is considered satisfactory a priori (note 6/10). Only the panelled living room on the ground floor and the bedroom on the floor, with their decorations in full, have been granted official protection since the decree of 22 August 2003. No information is available on its access to the public or its current use (visits, rentals, guest rooms).
