Origin and history

The megalithic complex of Mané-Carnaplaye, located in the commune of Saint-Philibert (Morbihan, Brittany), is a major archaeological site dating from the Neolithic. It consists of two dolmens (including the dolmen of Kerroch and the dolmen north), accompanied by their tumulus, as well as a terter, a slope and a group of menhirs. These funeral and ritual structures illustrate the cultural and religious practices of local neolithic societies, marked by the erection of stone monuments to honour the deceased or mark sacred places.

The site was officially recognized and protected by a registration order under the Historic Monuments on 24 July 2023. This protection covers not only the megaliths themselves, but also the soil of the 20 cadastral plots concerned (section AK), guaranteeing the preservation of their archaeological context. Although the precise location is considered "passable" (note 5/10), the approximate address "21 Au Phil de l'Eau" in Saint-Philibert makes it possible to situate the whole in a rural environment characteristic of Morbihan.

The property of the site is shared between the commune of Saint-Philibert and private owners. No information is available on its accessibility to the public, its tourist vocation or any associated services (visits, accommodation). The sources mentioned (Monumentum, internal data) do not provide additional details on archaeological excavations, material discoveries or specific uses of this site in Neolithic.

In the Neolithic era, Brittany was a region densely occupied by sedentary agro-pastoral communities. The megaliths, like those of Mané-Carnaplaye, probably served as places of collective burial or territorial landmarks, reflecting a complex social organization and a spirituality centered on the cult of ancestors. These monuments, which are often aligned or grouped together, demonstrate an advanced mastery of stone-cutting and transport techniques, as well as a desire to make a lasting mark on the landscape.
