Origin and history

The Manor House of Classé is a building located in the commune of Saint-Germain-de-Coulamer, in the department of Mayenne (Pays de la Loire). It consists of a main house body and a low wing in return, typical of regional seigneurial houses. The round tower, supposed to date from the 14th century, would be the vestige of a strong house ruined in the next century, reflecting an ancient occupation of the site.

In 1689, the estate was seized and sold, marking a pivotal period in its history. The facades and roofs of the mansion, including the house and its northeast wing, have been protected as historical monuments since 2003. This recognition underscores the heritage value of the building, particularly for its architecture combining medieval defensive elements and 17th and 18th century residential developments.

The main house houses a seigneurial room and a kitchen, both with granite fireplaces, as well as a billiard. A spiral staircase serves two apartments, each composed of two rooms separated by partitions decorated with geometrical motifs, bouquets of flowers and landscapes. These decorations, characteristic of the seventeenth century, illustrate the refinement of the seigneurial interiors of the period. The presence of independent latrines also reflects the concern for increasing comfort in aristocratic homes.

Located 2 km north of the village of Saint-Germain-de-Coulamer, the Manor House of Classé is set in a rural landscape marked by feudal history and then modern Mayenne. Its hybrid architecture, between medieval heritage and adaptations of modern times, makes it a valuable testimony to the evolution of lifestyles and power relations in this region.
