Origin and history
The Manor House of La Coudre is a historic building located in Changé, in the department of Mayenne, in the Pays de la Loire region. This monument is mentioned as a noble land, characterized by the presence of a 16th century manor house. Its location on a hill gives it a dominant position over the surrounding village and the neighbouring river, highlighting its strategic and symbolic importance in the local landscape.
The sources available, including the Dictionnaire historique, topographie et biographie de la Mayenne (1900-1910) by Alphonse-Victor Angot and Ferdinand Gaugain, attest to its existence as a seigneurial property. Although details about its occupants or its architectural evolution remain rare, its designation on the Cassini map and its inclusion in heritage inventories confirm its status as a notable monument to the Mayen heritage.
In modern times, manor houses like that of La Coudre often embodied the local power of the lords, serving both as a residence and as a symbol of authority. Their construction in height, as here, also reflected a desire for visual control over land and communication routes. These buildings played a central role in the social and economic organization of the countryside, where agriculture and craft activities structured daily life.
