Origin and history
The Hélardière Manor House is a Breton-style building built mainly in the last quarter of the 15th century. It is distinguished by its characteristic architecture of this period, mixing defensive and residential elements, typical of the manor houses of western France. The site is located about 500 metres west of the town of Donges, in an environment today marked by industrial proximity, including the tanks of the refinery located 130 metres south.
The mansion was listed as a historic monument in 2012, recognizing its heritage and architectural value. This official protection aims to preserve the structural and decorative elements of the 15th century, witness to local history and the evolution of seigneurial habitats in historical Brittany. No information is available about its original owners or its precise use in medieval times.
The location of the manor on the outskirts of Donges reflects a strategic occupation of the land, probably linked to the agricultural or seigneurial management of the surrounding area. Today, the site is part of a contrasting landscape, where the historical heritage borders a major industrial infrastructure, illustrating the economic transformations of the Loire-Atlantique.
