Origin and history

The Manor House of Château-Larcher, located in the commune of the same name in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, was founded in 1770 thanks to the donations and donations of the inhabitants of Château-Larcher and Marnay. Its initial objective was to welcome and rescue indigent labourers as well as sick day labourers, reflecting a charitable approach rooted in the local life of the eighteenth century. The building, of sober style, is characterized by a staircase of six steps leading to a terrace in front of the house, and an entrance door framed with flat mouldings surmounted by a slightly curvilinear lintel.

The main body of the mansion is flanked by two wings in return, forming a harmonious architectural ensemble. Although its primary vocation is social, the building presents remarkable elements such as its chapel, integrated into the structure. The facades and roofs, as well as the chapel, were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 1 June 1973, highlighting their heritage value. Today, the mansion belongs to a public institution, but its current use (visits, rentals, accommodation) is not specified in the available sources.

The location of the manor, at address 2 Route de Thorus à Château-Larcher, is estimated with satisfactory a priori accuracy (note 6/10), according to geographical data. This monument illustrates the community commitment of the modern period in Poitou-Charentes, where local initiatives played a key role in assisting vulnerable populations, particularly in a rural context marked by economic and health hazards.
