Origin and history

Mirvault Castle, also known as Mirwault, is located in the town of Azé, Mayenne, in the heart of the Pays de la Loire. This monument, whose exact origin is not specified in the sources, was thoroughly renovated in the 19th century. It is located in a closed park, on the edge of the Mayenne River, offering a remarkable landscape. Its architecture and environment reflect the aesthetic and functional transformations typical of the aristocratic residences of this time.

In the 20th century, Mirvault Castle changed hands several times within local noble families. In 1902, Christian Le Tessier de Coulonge died there, followed in 1910 by Ludovic Le Tessier de Coulonge. That same year, Count Joseph Gouin d'Ambrière, a decorated naval officer, became his owner after his marriage to Jacqueline Marie Charlotte Le Tessier de Coulonge in 1895. Today, the castle still belongs to the family Gouin d'Ambrière and carries out a tourist activity in the form of guest rooms.

Mirvault Castle illustrates the evolution of seigneurial residences in France from private residences to places open to the public. Its transformation into tourist accommodation reflects a modern adaptation, while preserving its architectural heritage. The monument is also part of the casteral heritage of the department of Mayenne, as evidenced by its mention in the list of local castles.
