Origin and history
The gate of Montaigut-le-Blanc is a medieval defensive work built in the 13th century, located in the village of the same name, in Auvergne. It was an integral part of the fortifications protecting both the local castle and the houses of the village. Its architecture, marked by a broken arc, reflects the military techniques of the time, with elements such as ravens formerly supporting mâchicoulis, still visible on the northeast side. These mechanisms were used to defend the main access against the attackers, illustrating the strategic importance of the site in a context of frequent regional conflicts.
The building has been listed as historic monuments since 19 January 1926, recognizing its heritage value. The gate is located in the immediate vicinity of the church of the village, below, in the department of Puy-de-Dôme (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). The current remains, like the two preserved crows, testify to its past role in protecting the village. Although partially altered by time, this door remains a characteristic example of medieval urban enclosures, designed to control the flow of people and goods while ensuring the safety of the inhabitants.
No information is available on the sponsors or craftsmen involved in its construction. The historical sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) emphasize mainly its architectural aspect and its heritage inscription, without detailing the specific events related to its use. The gate now belongs to the municipality of Montaigut-le-Blanc, but its current access or vocation (visit, public use) is not specified in the documents consulted.
