Origin and history
The Moulin Choix de Gastins is an unusual windmill, combining the characteristics of a windmill and a windmill. Located in the Seine-et-Marne department, in the municipality of Gastins, it is about 1 km from the village, on a plateau overlooking the surroundings. Its structure includes a cylindrical tower 8 meters high and 6 meters in diameter, topped by a rotating cap operated by an internal rack. This rare system makes it possible to rotate both the roof and the wings, equipped with the Berton model (1845), the first industrialized rack mechanism. The current building, probably built in the 17th century, was thoroughly renovated in 1828.
The mill operated until 1915, marking the end of its traditional agricultural use. Ranked as historical monuments on 9 December 1970 for its mechanism and structure, it was restored and restored to service in 1977. This classification includes the entire mill (cadaster Z 104), highlighting its heritage importance. The Berton wings, innovative for the time, illustrate the technical evolution of the mills in the 19th century, a period of modernization of milling tools in Île-de-France.
The site is located precisely at 5005 A Le Moulin Choix, 77370 Gastins, in a rural environment characteristic of the Brie. Although the sources mention "a priori satisfactory" location accuracy (level 6/10), its location on a plateau makes it a visible landmark in the landscape. The mill bears witness to the agro-industrial history of the region, where windmills played a central role in the local economy before their decline in the 20th century.
Today, the Moulin Choix de Gastins is a preserved example of rural industrial heritage. Its mechanism, still in place, offers tangible evidence of pre-industrial milling techniques and their adaptation to 19th-century innovations. The protection it has enjoyed since 1970 guarantees the preservation of this monument, both a work tool and a symbol of the artisanal know-how of Île-de-France.
