Origin and history
The Moulin Tosset, classified as a Historical Monument, is a former flour mill located in Griselles, Loiret. Its southern part, dedicated to the milling mechanism, is considered the oldest, while the central part has typical 15th century chimneys. The northern part, probably added at the end of the 19th century, completes the architectural whole. This mill operated until 1900, marking centuries of milling activity in the region.
The metal wheel of the mill, equipped with augettes and installed outside without shelter, as well as the gears on the ground floor, are the only mechanical elements still in working order. These remains bear witness to the milling techniques of the past. The mill was partially protected by a registration order in 1991, covering pre-19th century parts and its mechanism. Today, it belongs to a private company, but its state of conservation allows us to imagine its central role in local economic life.
In medieval and modern times, flour mills such as Moulin Tosset were essential infrastructure for rural communities. They were used to transform the cereals into flour, a food base, and were often a gathering and exchange place. Their management was sometimes a source of conflict, especially over water duties or milling taxes. In the Centre-Val de Loire, a region marked by strong agricultural activity, these mills played a key role in the social and economic organisation of the villages.
