Origin and history

In 1963, Henri Guillard, head of school and member of the IDEM, Pierre Dubois, inspector of academy, and Dr Charles Katz, president of the ANACR, organized an exhibition on the Dauphin resistance. His success prompted them to found the Committee of the Musée de la Résistance Dauphinoise, joined by Gustave Estadès, former resistant and deported. The museum opened in 1966 in Stendhal's native apartment, 14 rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau, inaugurated by Hubert Dubedout, Mayor of Grenoble, in the presence of Laure Moulin, sister of Jean Moulin.

In 1970, the museum took its present name and received the support of Pierre Mendès-France, MP for Isère. Faced with the limits of his premises, he was transferred in 1994 to the former CCAS building, 14 rue Hébert, after years of preparation. The inauguration took place on 1 July 1994 by Alain Carignon, as part of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation. The museum then becomes a museum controlled by the Direction des musées de France, with a dedicated budget and team.

The museum's collections, composed of nearly 8,000 pieces (archives, objects, oral and film testimony), were declared of public interest in 1993. They include original posters, photographs, leaflets, and everyday objects under the occupation. In 2001, the museum embarked on a project of Maison des Droits de l'Homme, an extension of the values of the Resistance. These archives, including testimonies, have become major historical sources with the gradual disappearance of the Second World War actors.
