Origin and history

The René Baubérot Museum in Châteauponsac was founded in 1944 by René Baubérot, professor of history and passionate archaeologist. He also founded Notre Terroir, then became curator of the museum from 1963 to 1976. The museum was originally designed to house Gallo-Roman remains, including those discovered during excavations at La Bussière Étable, where Baubérot exhumed a tank grave and film boxes. Some objects were transferred to the Musée d'Archéologie nationale de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, while others formed the core of local collections.

In 1957, the museum settled in a former Benedictine priory of the 14th century, St.Thyrse Square, after occupying the Fort House. Paul Schweitzer (1907–1984) played a key role between 1973 and 1982 in reorganizing collections and developing ethnographic sections, bringing the number of rooms to 17. These spaces, spread over three floors, illustrate everyday life in Limousin in the 18th and 19th centuries, with tools, clothing, furniture and archival documents. An annex, Maison du Terroir, was added in 1988 for temporary exhibitions.

The museum obtained the label Musée de France in 2003, recognizing its heritage importance. Managed by the association Notre Terroir until 2024, he then passed under the responsibility of the municipality of Châteauponsac. His collections cover archaeology (prehistory, Gallo-Roman, medieval), ethnology (trades, costumes, habitat) and local history, with remarkable pieces such as a coat by Paul Poiret or masterpieces of companions. The priory, formerly a seigneurial residence and school, now houses 900 m2 of exhibitions.

The archaeological excavations carried out by Baubérot, notably at La Bussière Étable, revealed a Gallo-Roman villa and a rich funeral furniture. These discoveries, complemented by donations and bequests (such as those of Louis Timbal, local cartographer), enriched the collections. The museum remains a unique testimony of limousine traditions, combining material and intangible heritage, from antiquity to the twentieth century.
