Origin and history
The French Brewery Museum is located in a former industrial brewery in Saint-Nicolas-de-Port, near Nancy. The current building, built in 1931 by architect Fernand César, is an emblematic example of the Art Deco industrial architecture. Today it houses a museum dedicated to the history of the brewery, with collections of ancient materials, advertising objects and brewing demonstrations. The museum, opened in 1988, became a major hub for amateurs and brewers in France.
The first mention of a brewery in Saint-Nicolas-de-Port dates back to 1826. In 1931-1932 Paul Moreau, leader of the Grandes Brasseries de Saint-Nicolas, built an ultra-modern brewery by Fernand César. After successive takeovers, the Stella Artois (InBev) group closed the brewery in 1986. Threatened by destruction, the building was classified as a Historic Monument in 1988 for its facades, roofs, cooling room and brewing room.
The museum presents permanent collections covering the evolution of brewing techniques from the 18th to the 20th century, as well as various temporary exhibitions (e.g. Beer and Art Nouveau, Beer in Africa). It also organizes cultural activities such as news competitions, comics or photographs, and practical brewing training. The building, made of reinforced concrete, requires restoration work undertaken since 2019 to preserve its architectural heritage.
The former brewery retained original equipment such as copper boilers (1931) and a refrigeration machine (1930-1932). The museum also publishes specialized works, such as La Brasserie de Tantonville (2007) or Peuples-bières d'Afrique noire (2010), and maintains a directory of French breweries. Its role goes beyond conservation: it boosts local and national brewing.
Saint-Nicolas-de-Port, affected by the closure of the breweries in the 1980s, has transformed this industrial heritage into a cultural and educational place. The museum collaborates with neighbouring institutions such as ENSAIA and the Institut français des boissons, strengthening its expertise. Temporary exhibitions, such as Beer and Foot at the World Cup, illustrate his desire to link heritage and current events.
The entrance gate and part of the buildings have been registered or classified since 1988. The brewery, disused in 1985, was bought by the municipality and entrusted to an association to make it a museum. Today, it attracts as much for its Art Deco architecture as for its living approach to the history of beer, combining conservation, education and innovation.
