Origin and history

The Office national d'études et de recherches aérospatiales (ONERA) was established in May 1946 under the leadership of Frédéric Joliot-Curie and the Minister of Armament Charles Tillon, in order to relaunch French aeronautics research after the Second World War. Its first director, René Jugreau, oversees the recovery of the great German wind tunnel d-Ötztal, transferred to France as a war take. As a result, L-ONERA absorbs pre-existing entities, such as the Laboratory of Aerospace Research (LRA) in Châtillon-sous-Bagneux, previously led by the German engineer Eugen Sänger during the occupation.

The Meudon site, integrated with ONERA, is the heir to the Central Establishment of the Chalais-Meudon Military Aerostation, founded in 1877. This historic site saw Colonel Renard's first electric-powered airship trials in the late 19th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, the site devoted itself to nascent aviation, before becoming a pillar of French aerospace research, contributing to emblematic programs such as Ariane, Concorde, Mirage and Airbus aircraft.

In the 1950s-1960s, ONERA played a key role in the development of helicopters, missiles and supersonic engines, in collaboration with the expanding French aviation industry. Its name evolved in 1963 to integrate the space dimension ("aerospace"), reflecting its adaptation to the challenges of space conquest. In 2007, the addition of the slogan "The French Aerospace Lab" marked its desire for increased international visibility.

Today, ONERA remains a major player in aerospace research, with exceptional means such as Europe's largest wind tunnel park, including Modane's S1MA wind tunnel (88 MW), and supercomputers dedicated to digital simulation. Its missions cover basic research, industry support (Airbus, Safran, Dassault), and training, under the supervision of the Ministry of the Armed Forces. The Meudon site, classified as a Historic Monument since 2022, illustrates this continuity between scientific heritage and modern innovation.
