Oratory including the Pietà contained in it (no CADASTRE box; PUBLIC AREA): Order of 14 March 1986
Origin and history
The Oratory of Painter is a religious monument located in the commune of Painter, in the department of Jura (39), in the region Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Dated from the second quarter of the seventeenth century, it is distinguished by its Pietà, a sculpted representation of the Virgin holding Christ dead, which is protected under the Historical Monuments. The building itself, together with this work, was classified by ministerial decree on March 14, 1986, highlighting their exceptional heritage value.
The location of the oratory at 5 Rue d'Auxonne is considered satisfactory (note of 8/10 for accuracy), and the monument is part of the departmental property. Although available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) do not specify its current use, its status as a Historical Monument suggests a cultural and memorial vocation. The absence of specific cadastration and its membership in the public domain reinforce its collective character, anchored in the local landscape.
The historical context of the seventeenth century in Franche-Comté, marked by conflicts such as the Ten Years' War (1634-1644) and a strong Catholic influence, explains the proliferation of devotional buildings such as this oratory. These buildings served as both places of prayer, spiritual landmarks for travellers, and symbols of resistance or reconstruction for local communities. Pietà, a recurring theme of popular piety, illustrates this artistic and social dimension of religious heritage.
