Origin and history

The Courtois Pastry, located 8 Place du Marché in Nîmes in the Gard department, is recognized as the oldest pastry in the city, founded in 1850. Its interior, including the two rooms decorated on the ground floor, is inspired by Italian theatres, an architectural and artistic style of the nineteenth century. This iconic place combines sweet craftsmanship and architectural heritage, reflecting local know-how and cultural influence of the time.

In 2017, the Courtois pastry, including its wooden front and the building door, was listed as historical monuments. This protection specifically concerns interior decorative elements and the façade, highlighting their heritage value. The decree of 2 November 2017 specifies the limits of this inscription, guaranteeing the preservation of a place full of Nîmes history and tradition.

The building, originally a confectionery called Horn, illustrates the evolution of artisanal shops in France over the centuries. Its exact address, 8 Place du Marché, and its Insee code (30189) firmly anchor this monument in the urban and historical landscape of Nîmes, in the Occitanie region. The Creative Commons license associated with certain photos of the site also demonstrates its public and cultural interest.
