Origin and history

The Porte d'Arles, also known as the Portail d'Arles, is an iconic building of Istres built in the 18th century. Located at the entrance to the historic centre, it replaces an old chapel and one of the two medieval gates of the seigneurial ramparts. Its sober architecture, in classic style, is distinguished by a concave shape, an arch resting on pilasters, and a Louis XV medallion decorated with the key to the vault.

Construction of the gate began in January 1771 at a cost of 6,110 pounds, financed in honour of Marshal Duc de Villars, lord of Istres and governor of Provence. Work was completed in June 1773. The pediment bears an incomplete inscription, the full wording of which – found in Marseilles – evokes the collective responsibility of citizens for the attacks on their territory. Materials come from local quarries.

Ranked a historic monument since May 5, 1930, the Gate of Arles symbolizes the architectural heritage and urban history of Istres. Its sober style and decorative elements, such as flowered garlands, reflect the artistic influence of the Enlightenment in Provence. Today, it remains a tangible testimony of the transformations of the city under the Old Regime.
