Origin and history
The Saint Martin Gate, better known as the Old Prison Gate, is a former fortified tower located in Châteauroux, Indre. Built in the 13th century, it was part of the six towers of the enclosure of the castle Raoul, a seigneurial castle of which it was the only preserved gate. Originally, it housed a castral chapel dedicated to Saint Martin, hence its official name. After the destruction of the ramparts, the tower was converted to prison, a function it retained until its partial reconstruction in the 15th century, including the current arcade that marked the entrance to the city.
At the street level, the tower presents a vaulted dome room pierced with shooting chambers and murderous in sight, testimony of its defensive role. A stained glass window decorated with the coat of arms of Châteauroux recalls the old gate to the Guedons, the main gate disappeared from the city. The tower, now owned by the department, has been protected since 1973 as historical monuments for its facades, roofs and passage. After serving as a prison, it now houses a guest room, mixing medieval heritage and contemporary use.
The Old Prison Tower illustrates the evolution of urban fortifications: first a key element of seigneurial defence, it became a symbol of the local judicial authority before its reconversion. Its architecture combines 13th and 15th century features, with an arcade characteristic of the late Gothic period. The coat of arms visible on the window highlight its connection to municipal history, while the murderers recall its military origin. Ranked among the historic monuments of Indre, it remains a rare testimony of the castral enclosures of the region Centre-Val de Loire.
