Porte de Fenouillet : inscription by decree of 27 January 1926
Origin and history
La Porte de Fenouillet is an urban gate located in the city of Hyères, in the department of Var, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, it is part of the remains of the old fortifications of the city. Its architecture reflects the medieval construction techniques typical of this period in Provence, marked by cultural exchanges and increased defensive needs.
The gate has been listed as historic monuments since 27 January 1926, recognizing its heritage value. Unlike many public monuments, it now belongs to a private owner, which limits its accessibility to the public. Available sources, such as the Merimée database or Wikipedia, confirm its importance in the local historical landscape, although little is known about its precise use in the Middle Ages.
Hyères, in medieval times, was a strategic city in Provence, located between the zones of influence of the Counts of Toulouse and local lords. Urban doors such as Fenouillet's played a key role in regulating entrances and exits, as well as in protecting against external threats. Their presence illustrates the social and military organization of the Provencal cities, where the ramparts delineated the urban space and symbolized the power of the local elites.
