Porte de la Condamine (Case K 679 to 681): classification by decree of 29 July 1961

Origin and history

La Porte de la Condamine de Tarascon is an architectural vestige dating from the 4th quarter of the 14th century, located in the commune of Tarascon, in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône (region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur). This monument, now classified as Historical Monuments by an order of 29 July 1961, bears witness to the medieval history of the city and its defensive system. Its current location at 29 Rue Jean Jaurès corresponds to an approximate location based on GPS coordinates, with an accuracy assessed as fair (note 5/10).

The gate is part of the communal heritage, as indicated by its status as property of the municipality. The protected elements, referenced under cadastre K 679 to 681, underline its historical and architectural importance. Although the available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) do not specify its current use (open to the public, rental, etc.), its classification attests to its heritage value. The Creative Commons license associated with his photo suggests visual accessibility for the general public.

Tarascon, in the 14th century, was a strategic city in Provence, marked by commercial exchanges and a social organization hierarchically around the nobility, clergy and artisans. Fortified gates, such as the Condamine, played a key role in protecting cities from regional conflicts or epidemics. Their construction also reflected the prestige of the local lords and the desire to control access to the city, essential for economic activities (markets, tolls) and the safety of the inhabitants.
