Porte de la Rivière and the remains of the surrounding ramparts: inscription by order of 13 February 1928

Origin and history

La Porte de la Rivière is a medieval town gate located in the commune of Hérisson, in the department of Allier. Built in the 14th century, it is the last vestige of the city's low fortifications. Its architecture reflects the defensive techniques of the time, designed to protect urban access.

The gate was listed as historical monuments by order of 13 February 1928. This ranking recognizes its heritage value and its role in local history. Today, it remains a testimony of the ramparts that once surrounded Herisson, although the accuracy of its location is considered mediocre (level 5/10).

Herisson, like many medieval cities, was organized around its fortifications. These were used to control entrances and exits, to protect the inhabitants from attacks, and to symbolize the power of the city. City gates, such as the River, played a central role in daily life, regulating trade and travel.
