Porte de la Ville : inscription by order of 9 November 1926
Origin and history
The Porte de la Ville, located in Saurier in Puy-de-Dôme, is the last vestige of the former fortifications of the commune. This monument is distinguished by a double defensive architecture: a broken arch on the exterior side, topped by the remains of a mâchicoulis brace adorned with three boudins, and an arch in the middle of the hanger on the inside side. These elements illustrate medieval military construction techniques, adapted to both protection and controlled passage.
Ranked as a Historic Monument by order of 9 November 1926, this gate bears witness to the strategic importance of Saurier at a time when the ramparts girded the cities to guard against attacks. Its present state, though partial, allows to imagine the fortified enclosure of origin, now disappeared. The gate served as the main access point to the city, marking the boundary between the protected urban space and the outside.
The location of the Porte de la Ville, at 2 Rue du Vieux Pont, suggests a historical link to the old traffic axes, probably a bridge or a major road. Its inscription in the title of Historical Monuments highlights its heritage value, both architectural and historical, for the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Available sources, such as the Merimée base, confirm its protected status for nearly a century.
