Origin and history

The Porte de Lyon, also known as the Porte de la Loi, is a medieval town gate located in Crémieu, Isère department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built between the 15th and 16th centuries, it was part of a wider defensive system including nine doors and fourteen watch towers. Originally, it was preceded by moats fed by the river Vaud and equipped with a drawbridge and a herse, reflecting its strategic role in protecting the city.

Mentioned for the first time in 1392, the door became in 1535 one of the main accesses to Crémieu, replacing a simple poterne. It is classified as historical monuments by order of 11 September 1906, thus recognizing its heritage value. Its structure, about 20 meters high, is covered with a four-paned roof in lauze, local limestone, and preserves crows that have supported wooden hoards.

Starting in 2018, a health diagnosis of the building initiated a restoration project to preserve this vestige of medieval heritage. The Lyon Gate illustrates the defensive architecture of the period, while at the same time testifying to the urban evolution of Crémieu, once surrounded by ramparts. Today, it stands at the corner of Rue des Augustins and Baron Raverat, in the heart of the city.
