Origin and history
The Porte de Paris is an emblematic building located in the commune of Gournay-en-Bray, in the Seine-Maritime department of Normandy. Built between 1778 and 1780, it is distinguished by its architecture consisting of two pavilions and two pillars, decorated with carved sandstones representing characters, animals and plant or geometric motifs. Originally, it probably marked a symbolic or functional entrance into the city, reflecting the artistic style and construction techniques of the late eighteenth century.
In 1792, in a revolutionary context, the coat of arms of the house of Montmorency, which decorated the monument, were erased, illustrating the political upheavals of the time. The gate of Paris was officially listed as historic monuments on 14 April 1930, recognizing its heritage value. However, in 1960 its pillars were moved to facilitate road works, partially changing its original aspect. Today, it remains a major architectural and historical testimony for the municipality.
The monument is located precisely Place de la Libération and Rue Legrand-Baudu, in the heart of Gournay-en-Bray. Its structure, although partially altered, retains remarkable decorative elements, such as sculptures on sandstones, which offer an overview of the craftsmanship of the time. Owned by the commune, the Porte de Paris continues to play a symbolic role in the urban landscape, while recalling the social and political transformations that France has undergone since its construction.
