Origin and history

The Porte de Perpignan is a key element of the former fortifications of the town of Elne, located in the Pyrénées-Orientales. It dates back to the 15th century and was one of the main entrances to the medieval city, today preserved in the street bearing its name. This monument illustrates the typical defensive architecture of the period, marked by thick walls and access control systems.

The Perpignan Gate was included in the additional inventory of historic monuments by an order of 23 February 1931. This official recognition underlines its heritage importance and its role in Elne's urban history. It is referenced in the Mérimée base of the Ministry of Culture under the number PA00104016, which facilitates its identification and protection.

Medieval fortifications, whose gate is a vestige, reflect the defence needs of cities at a time when local conflicts and invasions were frequent. In Elne, as in other cities in the Occitan region, these structures were also used to control the flow of people and goods, playing a major economic and social role. Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the spatial organization and the priorities of medieval societies.
