Origin and history

The Strasbourg Gate is a gateway to the 17th century fortifications of the city of Sélestat, located in the Great East. It is part of the Vauban ramparts, an emblematic defensive ensemble of French military architecture of that time. Built in the late 17th century, it was supervised by Vauban and Tarade, two major figures in military engineering at the time.

The building is located at 1b Place de la Porte-de-Strasbourg in Sélestat. It was listed as historic monuments in 1934, recognizing its heritage importance. Another part of the fortifications, the ramparts of Selestat, is also preserved, bearing witness to the military history of the city.

The Strasbourg Gate illustrates Vauban's influence in the region, with an architecture typical of the fortifications of this period. Today it is the property of the municipality and remains a symbol of the local historical heritage.
